If I was to redo it, I't mount it on a bracket off the headunit.

I mounted my call in the arm rest. Its connected tp the Audi mile and radio via a phone cord so the phone can be removed for outgoing calls. I also installed a mute swithch in the armrest.
Works well. phone stays covered in arm rest but can be removed (unplugged) easily.
