Default Any harm in running Different speed rated tires front and rear...

I would never do it on my car, but my GF blew out a front tire, and needs to replace atleast two. OEM on a Jetta VR6 is Mich. MX..4 $$$(225/45/17)and I told her to go with the Conti Extreme Contacts up front, or all the way around. And the guy is giving her a hard time for mixing speed rated tires. I know replacing all 4 is ideal, but I guess the rears have more than 50% left, and get two more conti's when those are shot.

I don't see an issue with mixing these two tires for the type of driving she will be doing. Thoughts?

They are $113for the conti's vs $172 for the Mich. She doesn't need $172 tires.

Default Not a good idea...

Handling is very different among tires with different speed ratings. Driving in a straight line, it's all fine. If you need to yank the wheel to avoid and accident, the car may feel very unstable. You're always safest keeping 4 similar tires on all 4 corners (if not the *same* tires). Personally, I don't even like mixing and matching tires at ALL.

If you've made up your mind to do this...put the higher speed rated tires in the back. It will prevent the back from getting wishy-washy in an emergency lane change.

Default Thank you......

That's the aspect I wasn't looking at. For most circumstances it would be OK, but in those case you mentioned it would make a difference. Thanks I couldn't figure it out.
