Default anyone ever heard of the Vredestein Wintrak winter tire? They were recommended by EuroTire...

The price I got is $195 per tire installed,
plus $10 per tire to install the smarttireII
sensor. Are these tires any good?
I know the Dunlop M2's are good, and those
are only $10 more.... should I just call back
and have em get me the Dunlops?

by the way, those prices are with mounting +
balancing included... They said it's $40
extra per tire to have em mounted and balanced
if I bring in my own.

Default $40 per tire for mounting and balancing? Must be Beverly Hills...

I just had a leaking tire plugged. $17 including rebalancing and remounting. $40 per tire is nuts. I recommend buying from TireRack, at much better prices than tire dealers, and having your friendly local mechanic or one of TireRack's recommended shops mount and balance for a lot less.

Default hakkapallitas...."are da killas wit stillettos", but i prefer blizzak, except....

when i lived ten years in alaska, hakkapalletas, studded, all four corners, front or all wheel drive, japanese or german (mebbe little swedeski).
among tires without studs, blizzaks dominate anything on snow or ice, fact. if you need studs because you have long term snowpack, or you live up a hill as wicked as the one i live on (i run blizzak, and they dominate) and want studs, hakkas

Default I bought Vredestein Wintraks last fall - $600 total installed

And that was at a specialty tire shop (Plus One in Denver). I'm very happy with the tires - quiet on dry pavement and awesome in the Colorado snow. And they're Z-rated.

Default Don't do it.

Put H rated winter tires on your S4. Stick with Pilot Alpins, Winter Sport M2s, or Nokian NRWs.

I got a place in Bedford that'll do Pilot Alpins in 225/45-17(H-rated) for $156.25/tire, or $625 plus tax - mounted, stemmed, balanced, and installed.

E-mail me if you want more info.

Default Those tires are way too wide for a light(relative) car like the S4.

You will be floating all over the place. The idea in snow, unlike sand or mud, is to dig through the top layers to the hard icy layer underneath. Then it is up to the soft coupound and or studs to achieve grip. Look at the tires that WRC cars use in the Nordic rallyes, they are 155 width tires with huge studs.

Unless you live in an area with only occasional snow, get the narrowest and tallest tire that you can fit on your car. For an S4, that would be a 205-55 16 IIRC. IT Italia has a wheel in 16 inch that does fit in case you are wondering.

Anyone happen to know if the 16 inch Audi steel wheels will fit over the S4 brakes?

Default It's all relative...

I agree 100% that narrower is better in the snow. But 225/45-17 is not as implausible as you make it seem. For example, the BMW 330Ci and SLK320 both step down to a 225/45-17 snow tire from their oem 245/40's - and are lighter than the S4.

Also, Waseem lives just outside NYC which typically sees no more than a few snow storms each winter. Streets are usually clear within a day. Also, I know Waseem is a very 'spirited' driver (;-p), so having good dry weather tires would help him stay on the road. The Pilot Alpins do utilize the latest technology in siping and silica compounds - so between quattro, these tires, a mild winter, and common sense, 225s should be fine.

My $.02
