Default anyone got tips for re-installing used lifters?

didn't see anything in the bentley

guy at the machine shop told me to drain the oil out of them before re-installing, by using a bolt to press in on the inside of the lifter in a vice, with very little pressure. supposedly this will prevent them from striking the pistons on the first startup? doesn't make much sense to me.

I know new lifters are different, where you're supposed to soak them in oil over night.

Do you need to line up the drain hole with anything when installing them?

any other tips?

Default that makes absolutely no sense what so ever...

used lifters should be treated the same way you'd treat a new lifter. Soak upside down in oil until you install them.

BTDT on my 12v.

Default Is the head on the car?

If yes, I'd be really careful installing used lifters. The potential for contact is very real.

Default The procedure he gave you is exactly correct.

That same procedure is in the bentley as well, for all hydraulic lifter VAG products. The other thing you can do is to install them and just turn the engine over by hand in about 1/4 turn segments. Let teh engine sit for about 30 min in between. But, the first way is the recommended and best way to be sure you don't end up with bent valves.

As for lining them up, that's unnecessary. They are designed to rotate in use, no specific chanels to line up.

Default That would be a bad idea.

As 4Driver said, you should make sure they are collapsed before install.

Default well ya learn something new every day!

I put 'em in used, but I did turn the motor over a few times by hand before I started and didn't have any issues.

Good to know though.

Default thank you

motor is not in the car yet, it's not even assembled yet. I had the head rebuilt to go with the new motor, but my lifters are fine and since I'm not changing cam's yet, I want to re-install them.
