Default Anyone here have their dealership open up their tranny and

replace the synchros?

I'm having trouble shifting from 1st to second and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd. (even after warm-up)

The service manager admits that there is a problem, and will have to talk with Audi on what to do. He did mention that the synchros may have to be replaced. This would involve taking apart the transmission--I don't like this idea. As most of us know, the tranny is a complex part of the car, and I don't want it to be split open, worked on, then put back into my car.

Anyway, if anyone can give me their experiences with their transmissions, as well as how their dealership fixed your problem, I would greatly appreciate it!

All thoughts welcome...

Thanks in advance.......
Patrick

Default This has happened to some S4 folks.

Nick Gustas and Innovator are two people who had the dealership open up the tranny and replace synchros. They're actually discussing it in the S4 forum right now.

https://www.audiworld.com/forum/m.new/s4/msgs/220577.phtml</a

Default Dealership replaced mine...

I had similar problems with my transmission but the transmission also started to make some funny noises. I took it to the dealership and they took it in for service. They ended up keeping it and replacing the entire transmission under warranty. They said something about Audi not wanting them to take it apart to find the problem...the service manager said they were to replace it instead. I don't know if this helps but it was my experience.

Default I thought the newer transmissions were "0" clearance, you couldn't rebuild them.

The tolerances are created at the factory without bushings, that's why some use motor oil and some even use Auto trans fluid. The heavier weight oils 80/90wt would never reach into the close tolerances. I heard that once even a small piece of metal gets loose, it's only a matter of time before the trans self-destructs. This is what I understand to be true.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one. It's still doing it (from day 1) and I have 3,000 miles now.
