Default Anyone here using pad type oil pan heaters?....

With winter approaching I'm looking at getting one and am just wondering how they work, as well as if there is any possible danger in baking the oil or damaging the engine in any way? Also, what would be a better idea, an oil pan heater or a battery heater?
Thanks<ul><li><a href="http://www.padheaters.com">http://www.padheaters.com</a</li></ul>

Default I have one on my S4. They don't get anywhere near hot enough to damage anything.

I think best case, you'll get your oil to ~100°F if you leave it plugged in overnight. Your car's oil temp gauge doesn't even register below 150°F and normal operating oil temp is between 200 and 250°F.

Default Oil heaters rock. They will never get hot enough to damage anything unless

there is a MAJOR short/problem with it. They are safe.

They don't do much of a job raising the temp very well in my exp. but if you plug it in when the oil is already warm they will keep it so all night for a minimal amount of energy.

I have one on my trucks oil pan as well as the transmission. I wired them together into one plug and have never had any issues.

They are used on just about all piston aircraft engines. No problem IMO.

Aircraft engines need them because they usually spec ONLY straight-weight oil, SAE 40, 50 or 60.

In a 1.8t, you are good with that oil down to +5f.

Default Thanks, and a question for you

I put the thicker oil in because my turbo is now oil cooled only, and that SOB gets HOT! Should I just stick with the OEM fill or stick with something thicker like this? My oil temps are way higher than they were with a water cooled turbo.
