anything against older A4's?? need advice
Should I be hesitant to buy an "older" ('96 or '97) A4? I'd like a newer one, but can't swing the $$$ right now. Are there any legit reasons for not buying one and just waiting until I can swing a newer one? What are the negatives of the '96 or '97 models vs. the newer ones? I'm checking out a green '96 2.8 with 60000 miles for $9500. How does this sound? I've gotta have an A4. Thanks!

steer clear of the 12 valve 2.8, which is what all '96 2.8s are...
I have one, and the mods are few and far between. TDIracing.com has upgrades, but they are mucho expensive. I would got for a 30v or a 1.8t. The 1.8ts have many cheap upgrades available.

Are you looking for a 1.8 or 2.8?
If a 2.8, look for a 98 or newer for the 30V version.
The 1.8 started in 97. There are some slight differences through the years, but nothing too major. I have a 97, and I've been told the 97s are slightly lighter, but noisier due to less sound insulation. I also found out that I have a carbon fiber driveshaft, which I think they phased out later on.
The 99.5 would be the one to look for, as it will be the most "refined" but I wouldn't pass up an earlier model if the price was right.

no way, 2001.5's are the best
best looking rims by far (17" 9spoke) most horsepower at stock (170 vs 150 in prev years). best selling months in audi history. we're going to sell more audi's than we did last year! and that was our best year ever!

Maybe so, but still, many believe this. Probably due to stuf CR wouldn't care about like...
- New headlights (C5 style [A6 i guess])
- Foglights moved to lower front bumper
- New tailights
- C5 outer door handles
- Washer jets removed from the hood
- Revised outer mirror shape
- B pillar trim in high gloss material
- White side turn indicators
- Aluminum door sill trim with Audi script
- Revised center console and climate control panel
- Dampened grab handles in headliner and rear light modules
- Ambient lighting in headliner for dash and center console
- Illuminated air vent controls
- Revised grille
- Revised cupholders
- Larger C5 sunroof
So, most of the styling upgrades as in the newer models, but no DBW. Then again, still only 150HP, but thats easily fixed.
