I went with 18" this summer because cleaning my stoptechs with 17"s was a PITA, but, 17"s are lighter, take more abuse, and are cheaper, especially tires. Get a 17" wheel where the spokes are flush to the face of the wheel. They look bigger. =P

dodging potholes is risky busines no matter what because of traffic, but just think:
if it rains or snows, some potholes may fill with water or snow and look "flat" or shallow" when in fact they will destroy your rim. When the roads are wet/snowy, you will have a harder time seeing potholes for that reason, and have less traction to swerve, etc. when/if you do see them.
I hate to suggest 17s, because 18s look nicer, but I, too, went with 17s just because they are going to be a bit less destruction-prone.

shoot man! its easier to take them off, clean the calipers and polish them with the wheels off. that also lets you get to the inside of the wheel where you can wash/wax it. makes your friggin wheels look SO clean!
