I was going to start the AutoRX sludge treatment on my 30v (w/ penzoil 10w40 conventional), but it's got a broken thermostat at the moment and the oil doesn't always get up to full temp. I assume AutoRX probably needs the heat to work properly? It's going to be a few weeks before I can change the thermostat, but I need to change the oil now - should I wait on the ARX or throw it in now? I've only got 3 bottles so need to use it right.

you can do it now or later (doesn't matter), when you replace the sensor I would think.

car heats up fine when i block off the radiator w/ cardboard as a test, so it's gotta be a broken thermostat.
and here I am thinking changing a t-stat on an AEB is bad...you basically need to remove the frigging timing belt on the ATQ to replace it!

I assume you put in a whole bottle, maybe more? The whole ARX application process is overblown. Add 1 bottle to fresh oil is all it should say.
If you want to run longer and hotter, just wait for a while to do that, it certianly can't hurt. I'd do the rinse phase and then just add a 4-6 oz portion to your next few oil changes. Time and heat are key, no need to rush.

Not really sure of the condition of the motor as I haven't pulled a valve cover, but it has 92k miles and it looks a little dark (but not terrible) through what little I can see in the oil fill area.
I was going to go with the "sludge treatment" as documented on the auto-rx site.
I have 10quarts Penzoil 10w40 and 3 brand new bottles of AutoRX, haven't touched any of it yet.

1 1/2 bottle cleaning, rinse and then three 1/2 bottle "maintenance" doses would be extremely effective. The maintenance doses can be with synth oil, no problem....another overly tedious aspect of the product application.

I ran ARX in my one 30v and cut open the used filters, nada. So I would not think a big V6 filter would get clogged- at all. As far as running 5k, just do it. I think Frank has gone to longer applications, maybe even full ocis. He has certinaly talked about it. Also, he is catering to a lot of interests, a lot of his customers want FAST results, etc. Everyone who has been around at Bob's a long time agrees, just use ARX like an additive. Frank did some tests where a maintenance dose helped increase oil service life, oxidization and wear numbers were very low on extended use....why not just apply that logic to a longer cleaning treatment, etc.

in winter, you can run 5w-30 in that engine, but I dunno where you live. Thinner oil for ARX is recommended, supposedly flow+solvency is better with it. I would not sweat it, 10w-40 is good down to -15f or so. Still, you will probally use the 10w-40 later anyway if you bought some lighter winter oil now. fwiw, PepBoys has the $9.99 Special, 5q Formula Shell + Proline filter (Puralator) I got like three so far, for other people's cars, still...a hit.
