Audi Manual Transmission Non-rebuildable?

Well, my 1st gear has a chipped tooth. It's been like this for about 20k miles but I figured it was time to have it rebuilt. Unfortunately it took me about ten tries before I could find a shop that would even look at it. After leaving the car with them for a day for them to "diagnose" what I already knew was the problem, the guy tells me that Audi manual transmissions can not be rebuilt. Either you purchase a new one for a dealer or get a used one. He then said you can never find used ones because they're in high demand since Audis always chip their first gear tooth and so he wouldn't even bother looking. (Must be nice to be able to so freely throw away potential customers)
Is this true? I can't imagine that you can not rebuild a transmission, someone built the thing in the first place. And if it is true, is there really a shortage of used transmissions?
I've called AAMCO and asked them for a price on a used tranny and they said they'd call right back (one week ago). I also called the local Audi dealer (Valley Motors, ugh) and you can no longer talk to directly to someone there but have to leave a voice mail with a "Maintenance Adviser". So I did that no one ever called back either.
If anyone has a clue what this'll cost me I'd appreciate the info. Also, if you know someone in the Baltimore area who'd actually do the work that would also help.
Thanks,
JKM

it's a junkyard database. The tranny can be rebuilt, but it's usually not the most cost effective way to deal with the problem.

I don'nt know exactly where you are in the Baltimore area, but these guys know Audi and VW. If they can't get you a rebuilt or used tranny, they could tell you where you could. 1-410-994-0000.
