Ashtray mod is simple (and cheap). When I first got my car I was pissed that there was no good place to hold coins. I had heard the horror stories of people putting coins in the center arm rest and then getting them stuck in the hinge, so I bought the coinholder from clair parts. It worked fine, but opening up the center armrest to get at the coins was awkward, and the coin holder reduced an already too small storage place. One day I saw a posting (I don't remember who it was) who had fixed up his ashtray to be a coinholder. I thought that was a great idea, but I did not see any instructions on how he did it. So I just attacked it myself.
This is how you do it:
When you open the door to the ashtray, on the right hand side in the front is a little tab that you slide to the right to take the ashtray out in order to dump it. Once you get it out, turn it upside down and you will see that the chrome piece on top is just affixed to the plastic tray with a couple of small tabs that are easily bent up.
Bend them up and take the chrome top off the ashtray. Now you have an easily accessable plastic tray to hold coins or other small objects (if you dare) etc. Next I went down to my local hardware store and bought a little package of self adhesive felt. (Two 6X6 squares for about $2). I then carefully cut a few pieces of the felt and lined the plastic tray so the coins would not make noise while I drove.
Thats it. The (former) ashtray just fits right back where it came from and is a nifty and accessible place for coins.
Good luck
Simple mod. Cost me $2 and now my A4 has a really accessible place for coins.

I used a dremel to make use of the entire ashtray. I used self-adhesive foam-like material to line it. Very easy and very useful.

it came off very easily by just bending up the 4 little tabs on the underside of the tray. While leaving the chrome surround looks nice, it seems like you went through a lot of trouble needlessly.
By not cutting that piece there is also the possibility returning the car to stock when it is time to sell it.
For avantaholic13: Mine looks the same as Paul's except minus the chrome top piece (which is now sitting in my desk drawer).
