Auto-dim rear view mirror almost dead..replacing?
I have an '00 A4 1.8TQMSX, and the auto-dimming rear view mirror is pretty much kicking the bucket. The dimming material (LCD?) is getting blotchy, and taking a long time to dim.
The car's 6 months out of warranty, but I'd like to replace with the same mirror. Has anyone done this? Searched archives but didn't find anyone going with OEM replacement.
BTW I'm probably going to tint soon, but do it all round, and I like the auto-dimming..which is why I want to go with OEM.
Cost? Difficulty of operation?
Thanks,
-TJ

Buy vaseline first...
If you have to replace it, look into the OEM rearview for the B6 A4, which has a compass built in. I believe it's plug and play with the B5 cars. Cost is around $300. I would expect the cost of the B5 A4 mirror to be marginally less. Replacing it should be a diy job. When the B6 came out, people were jumping all over this rear view mirror, so I imagine you'll find some info in the archives if you look.

I never had one to begin with on my 98, but i installed one...(more)
It should be a simple plug and play for you - there's a harness that you plug into. I had to hardwire mine down to the fusebox since my car was not already wired up for it.
So if you buy the right one - you're set.
