Default Auto/Triptronic tranny issue....HELP!

I purchased a 98'A4 1.8T at an auction and it of course has a tranny issue. When you shift from park down into the drive position, you must pull down below drive into "D4" for drive to engage, you can then shift up into the regular "drive" and everything is hunky doory. If I were keeping the car I would just say "F-it" since it doesn't seem to affect the cars performance in any way; but I'm trying to sell the car. Anyways; the TCM is not kicking a code to the VAG-COM. I have replace the circut board under the shift consol and made sure the magnet for the triptronic all in place; needless to say it didnt cure the problem. NExt on the list was to change out the transmission multi-function switch and that did not fix the problem either! I'm running out of ideas here! Any thoughts? I have a hunch that perhaps its a sloppy linkage issue somewhere between the gear box and the tranny but not sure....HELP!

Default Re: your first and prolly second gear is toast!

You may think so but you can shift smoothly through every gear. In fact you dont even need to go all the way into "D4", you can pull into "drive" a little harder and it works too...say for instance you are looking down at the shift **** like so:

Park
Reverse
Neurtral
Drive_______ *the shifter only needs to be here
D 4
D 3
D 2

the shifter only needs to be in the lower part of drive to engage.

Default Get a manual and a DVM to check for continuity.

Maybe somethings is slightly out of adjustment, I mean some people do get lucky and it is a simple fix.
