Last night's Nova (PBS) had a show on the history of auto safety. One of the interesting clips that they had was from a police camera that monitors traffic on the Autobahn. It showed a guy in a Mercedes roadster (the model with removable top and the pop-up rollbar) who loses it coming around a bend at 150 mph. The car caroms off a guardrail, flips over and slides on its top for a few hundred yards, then goes into the ditch and barrel-rolls a couple of times. Amazingly, the next thing you see is the guy climbing out and literally walking away from it! No wonder they build cars the way they do in Germany.
Doug G
98.5 1.8TQM (keeping the rubber side down)

A few weeks back, someone posted an angry attack on airbags citing them as example of government over regulation. In fact, they cited the incident of the child that was killed in last night's NOVA -- but failed to mention that the father is still a vocal advocate of airbags!
Although the airbags were originally employed by Mercedes in Germany, the gas injectors were always made in the USA by Morton Thiokal (who also produces the space shuttle rockets). Thiokal built a plant next to MB in Stuttgart many years before airbags were mandatory in the US to keep MB supplied.
Excellent show.
