Aux (AC) fan bad?

Hi all-
How do I know if my Aux fan is going? Here is my situation.
My clutched fan died and eventually (after like 6 months) I replaced it with an EFK. At this point I started popping the 40Amp fan fuse on a consistent basis.
So, checking into it more it appears that the aux fan starts heating up massively within a minute of starting up, not good! This usually means 1 of 2 things, bad ground or bad fan.
I rewired the system so that it is as solid as can be and its still heating up like the sun, with or without the EFK installed.
At this point I am running only on my EFK (direct connected into the harness so it runs full blast all the time) and have the Aux fan disconnected so my car doesn't overheat.
How can I diagnose a bad Aux fan?

I picked up the standard automotive relay but the EFK never kicked on so either i have it wired incorrectly or the relay was bad.
I'll pick up the adjustable and pop it in where the old relay was and see what happens.
On the Aux fan though, even running on its own in the OEM harness it overheats..

Yea, thats how I tested it, direct ground/power from the battery and the problem stayed on. Pretty annoying stuff!
I think I'll pick this up, does it seem correct? A bit pricey but it looks like it bypasses the OEM harness completly and manages its own temp control.
