Default auxiliary/coolant fan constantly on high (Chris please read ;-P )

Okay, I've posted about this before, and chris I'm not doubting your wisdom here I'm just trying to understand the process. My coolant fan is consistently running in a cooldown cycle, with the fan on high - this happened right after I did my timing belt change.

I've been told to try pulling the relay for the coolant fan under the driver's side knee bolster. But if I pull the relay, isn't this going to switch the fan off anyways? ie ,not give it any power?

I was talking with Scott about this and we didn't understand what exactly is taking place in this whole testing process. The coolant temperature sensor tells the coolant fan when to turn on, and for how long and how fast... my coolant temps are good, temp gauge is okay in the car...

Someone want to fill in the puzzle for me? Thanks... I'm about to go do this but I want to know why I'm doing it... thanks...

Default ok reading the wiring diagram in bentley...

pulling the 5amp fuse labled "21" in the diagram should disable the full fan speed mode, but allow the low speed mode.

pulling relay "2" would have the same effect.

Default now as far as why the fan is always on high speed...

again according to bentley..

if either the coolant temp thermo switch or the A/C pressure switch gets pulled to ground, then the high speed fan setting is activated.

the thermo switch was the one you had to disconnect from the lower radiator hose during the T/B install.

i dont know where the A/C pressure switch is.

Default the most likely culprit...

would be the thermo switch. you definatley had to unplug that to do the T/B install.

there should be three wires coming off the thermo switch...

brown = ground
red w green stripe = high speed
brown w black stripe = low speed

you could use a volt meter to see if the red/green wire is showing voltage differential between it and ground. if it isnt, then that mean the temp switch is activated/stuck.

Default thermo switch, hrm. that's what i'm gonna bank on.

the problem is, I have to drain the coolant to replace, yes?

i would think you have to...do some electrical hunting with a voltmeter before you do.
