While waiting for MY 98.5 2.8 Avant qMS (yes, in pelican blue) to finish it's 22,500 mile service (not too shabby for one year, huh?), one of the salesguys told me that the dealership couldn't get its hands on any avants in either configuration and a lot of their customers were having to opt for either the sedan of the A6 Avant. Apparently, the A4 avants are so wickedly popular in Europe and elsewhere that only 9% or so of total production is allocated to the states. <p>But, hey! What makes a diamond valuable save for beauty and rarity?

This is the deal I experienced. In October last year on a Thursday on the way to work my '88 Jetta GLI 16v quit on me. (Clogged fuel injectors as it turns out) So I called the dealer in my area which is 230 miles away. He says he has in stock a 98.5 Avant QMS, Bose, Sunroof (all options except tip) Briliant Black. Deal is invoice +$500. I say OK and he delivers the car the next morning. No problems to date, the car is perfect. Did I luck out or are most people just picker than I am. I just couldn't see waiting 8 months and I expect that except for a few "car nut" most people wouldn't either. I think AOA is missing a lot of sales if 3-7 months is the waiting list. All comments IMHO.
