Default If you maintained a 2 second following distance and you wouldn't have hit it...

On an Audi drive a while back, we headed out on the highway. I was leading. Sure enough, people behind me were all trying to maintain close formation on the Audi in front of them (4-5 car lengths). I've got 1-2 seconds in front of me and another car. I see retread and am able to easily avoid it me. The Audi behind me narrowly misses it. The Audi behind him smacks it, runs over it and spits it back out for the Audi behind him to hit as well. Two bumpers smashed up and one radiator holed rendering one Audi out of commission.

Default Hence a 2 second following distance. At 70mph, that is 205 feet - enough to come to a complete stop

I've also BTDT with road debris while following another car about 50 feet behind. I ran over a big object that dented my center resonator. If I'd been 2 seconds behind, I would have found some way to avoid hitting it, and avoid any cars next to me, and keep someone from plowing into the back of me.

Default I hear ya, I bliztkrieged a half empty case of beer last week...

Fell of some jack@ss's truck in front at 75mph, i swerved and just clipped it, but i know the feeling. If there were other cars on the road next to me I would have been screwed. Sucks dude.
