Away from home, low on funds, oil light is on...manual says 5W-30 or 5W-40, will 10W-30 suffice?

yes it will work,
its better to have oil of a slightly incorrect or less than perfect viscosity, than not enough oil. Not enough oil can lead to wear and overfilling the oil can pack your catalytic converter full of burnt oil which will fvck it up.
