Is a B5 A4 a good candidate for a track car?

The B5 is a great car, don't get me wrong, but its too heavy and the diffs are not biased very well for track use. 914 or 986 Porsche would make for a better track car and are forgiving.

a gutted non/street legal car is no fun IMO. A race car that you can drive on the street and track would be much more enjoyable. I don't know what your driving skills are like but if your not seriously into tracking, you driving can always be improved and make you faster.
Plus if you really get into stuff... you can pick up an old Miata, Civic, Mustang, Camaro etc really cheap. Theres someone on AWOT that picked up a miata, had the whole car resprayed and put on a whole new suspension for ~$5k I think, could have been less

It doesn't sound like you have much experience so you might want to just drive the car and have fun with it before you worry about trying to turn it into a race/track car.

it'll out handle the B5 anyday. If you want it, you better act fast. I'm about to send Honda my payoff this friday if everything goes well. =)

Dirving skill has so much to do with it I cannot descirbe it in words. I had my nearly stock A4 out on the track for the first time last summer and I learned enough to where I was able to pass e36 M3s and other more track ready cars.
It has already been said, but it all comes down to driving skill. Improve yourself before you modify your car. I don't care how hared you think you have driven your car on the street or how well you think you know your car's braking and handling characteristics... You are a n00b that first time out on the track.
Take your car out as is now is my advice. Get used to it and improve yourself. Then mod the car.
