Default Even then...it's not so simple...

The RTI unit is a smidge under $400. The Klann tool Mike references is about $700. There really aren't too many ways around it. Either shell out big coin for the right tool, or do it the hard way, and save some money.

Default trying to think (this could be dangerous)

we had the conventional spring compressors from craftsman (gotta love sears!), since it wasn't practical to pick up the car from the lift and bring it over to the wall mtn one (well, i could've done it myself but larry was scared i wouldn't be able to carry a 3500+lbs car)

- now, i'm trying to recall, whether or not, we would've been able to use those compressors in there......if there was any way to get them in there/to work...(without taking off the upper link...

Default Doubtful

The spring is a tapered coil spring. Meaning it doesn't have the same OD from top to bottom.

The bottom of the coil sits inside the arm, and I don't think there's any way you could fit a traditional 2 bolt type spring compressor in there without it seriously getting in the way.
