I want to say no. If you want better gearing go with a B5-A4-V6 tranny.

like gldnrocket said, for easiest/cheapest/most readily available better gearing get a 2.8 tranny.

Default Unlike the others .. I am pretty sure it is ...

IMO ... Audi wouldn't have changed the 1.8t block casting so significantly as to cause a revamp of the transmission bell housing ....

The 01 6 speed uses the same prop shaft number as the late 02 and 03 6 speeds ... 8D0 521 101 J

The 01 EDU, 02 and 03 FYF and GBE boxes use a 01E 301 103 L front case and all but the 03 share the rear case 01E 301 231 N ... the rear case on the 03 shows as a 01E 301 231 AN ...

The shifter mech are different but I expect you could fit a 01 S4 shifter assem to a later 6 speed without too much ish ... I'd also look at trying a 03 shifter in teh B5 body .. very likely it will fit too. The RS2 mech fit my B5 chassis without too much hassle (had to lengthen the rod by an inch). The real hassle was retro-fitting (for shifter clearence issues) the old RS2 style aluminum clutch slave and plumbing ....

I think a fit is likely enough to do a little more research .... my .0125$ worth ....

Default Yippers is correct. It's a direct bolt on but why would you do it? (QFrog..Chime in please)

The end gear ratio is the same from what I was told before. Not to mention, you'll rip through the gears pretty quickly. You'd be better off going with a B5 2.8 tranny.

Default S2 and RS2 early trannys fit fine, I rod (old style) needed for my 97, A friend bolted up a new s4 t

tranny, but it failed. He ended up with a 96 s4 tranny. Mine at least has great 3rd and 4th gears, much better than any others I have found. But the 96 s2/rs2 trannys are getting very expensive, from 3500$ for a good late s2 to over 7k$ for a Kluge rebuilt rs2 with all new insides and frozen gears.
Strongest tranny I have seen is an rs6 auto modified by Level 10 which handles 1000lb ft. but you are again talking 5k$ to modify and who knows how much to get an ecu to work w/it.

Default Wouldn't a closer gear ratio would equal faster acceleration?

And if the end ratio is the same, you still get the same top end speed and mpg.

I was talkin with Mike @ PureMS, and he said the B5 2.8V6 tranny bolted right up, but thought the drive shaft may need to be changed.
