Default i think someone posted about this yesterday - jack the car up and try moving the wheel around

see if there is an excessive amount of play...

Don't buy a used wheel bearing.

never even crossed my mind. I thought maybe someone had a new one they didn't need for some reason.

Default Best way is to put the car on a lift. Start the engine and run it up to 40mph or so in 3rd gear.

A person underneath with a stethoscope can diagnose it pretty easily at that point. Otherwise, take some hard corners. That will tell you which side.

Almost forgot, the wheel itself will have freeplay if the bearing is really bad.

What makes you think it's bad if you don't know how to tell?

Default Front, rear? It's pretty easy to tell which side (unless you have one on each side)

when you go around a corner, and the noise goes away, the bad one is on the INSIDE of that turn..

Example: take a left turn, and the noise goes away, it's a left bearing.

Quick Reply: bad bearing diagnosis. besides the noise how can you tell for sure a bearing is shot?
