Bad clutch

There is something wrong with my clutch on my '96 A4 with 91,000 miles. I am 90% sure it is the throw bearing, as it has been making noise when I depress the clutch for some time now. It is now to the point where it sounds like it is falling apart. My question is, How long are the clutch plates SUPPOSED to last? Should I just get a whole new clutch at 90K miles? If I ask my mechanic, I'm sure they'll say yes, no matter how worn the plates are. I want an honest opinion, though, as I really shouldn't pay for a whole new clutch now, but if the plates are supposed to go in the next year, then I might as well break out the credit card. Thanks in advance for the advice.

I usually get 100-110 miles/clutch. It is wise to do a clutch replacement if a throw out bearing needs to be replaced, because you need to drop the trans to get to the throw out bearing. And the labor is a mute point then, you might as well replace the clutch when the trans is out...good luck. My 90 coupe q was around $1500 complete.
