Default Ok, and if on the highway it stays dead center ...

on backroads it goes down maybe 1 tick if that, and idle it stays dead center, doesn't sound to bad does it?

I will get it replaced or do the job when i come back after this weekend, ill prob have it done next weekend. But my main question was would it be ok to travel a 150-200 mile trip with this condition i just described? I figure it is ok because on the highway it stays dead center.

What do you think?

Thanks

Default as long as it's not travelling above the center mark you should be fine for the trip

An thermostat that opens too early prevents the coolant from getting up to temp, which isn't detrimental.

Default That's a 189F...I use the Neuspeed 180F thermostat and fan switch=excellent.

With both those parts the temp stays at the optimum position on the gauge, one hair to the left of dead center. Neuspeed sells quality thermostats too, they go the distance. I have used them in VW cars from when they first starting selling them.

Default However, a lower degree thermostat and/or fan switch is not bad.

I agree, running a car with an open Tstat can cause what you are mentioning. But...running a car with a 180F stat and fan switch is just running the car 9F cooler, which is actually good for many vehicles including the A4 turbo. Point: A bit cooler is okay...but open Tstat is not.

Default Hmmm not on the website, special order?

strangely I get 1 hair to the left on the stock 87C one so maybe i should just keep it in. Ill log the temps on a vag and see what it is.

Default Re: Is it bad to drive with a sticky thermostat?

How do you know it's the thermostat and not the temperature sender? The temp senders go bad a lot. I just replaced mine in the '99 car. It has the old square blue type ($34 grrr) and not the rounded green type ($5).
