Default Bad Power Steering whine, what needs to be replaced ?

My power steering fluid level has been diminshing slowly, so I've been replenishing the supply to keep it where it belongs. This has been a monthly thing for the past 4 months or so. Recently, it became weekly. Fluid slightly foamy. Topping up used to eliminate the noise as soon as it became noticeable. Now, the level is where it belongs but I'm getting a whine when the car is started, slight "hum" in the steering wheel. Very loud whine when I turn the wheel. The steering wheel jerks/stutters slighty. Obviously much more noticeable at low speeds and in parking lots. What do I need to replace ? Is this a steering rack thing ? Is it just a belt ? Is it the pump itself ? Help is much appreciated !!

Default Sounds like the pump. You may have a leak in the system as well

you should have found the leak in the first place. Letting the fluid get low and getting air in there probably damaged the pump.

Default 2nd, and what kind of fluid are you using? I hope it's not "power steering" fluid.

If you did, you can try to flush it and put the proper fluid in there.

Using Pentosin, not planning to do the work myself, most likely take it to a local shop. Any recommended places to get a pump ? Local shop always reams on part prices to make up for reasonable labor prices.

Default

You could bring your own part. Or DIY, not that hard.

Default High pressure hose could be leaking.

There's a high pressure hose that seems to be quite prone to leaking, 11a in this picture:

Mine is leaking pretty nicely as well....for a month or so I was topping off fluid every week, now it's every other day. On mine, there's fluid all over that area--on the pump itself, the lower rad hose, lower IC hose, etc. I'm almost positive it's the hose because there seam in the hose where I think it's coming from is higher than everywhere else that's covered in fluid. So I've parked it and the hose ($225 dealer list price!!) is on the way. Buy the pump, if that's the problem, from PureMS, ECS Tuning, or Suncoast Motorsports. Good luck

Andy
