The Grey foam thing in the well is the pad under the spare tire.

system ;-) You'd have less wiring resistance to drop voltage across if you battery was in the trunk wit da bumps :-P Not to mention better front to rear weight distribution.

if you ever get a dead battery with your car facing in with cars next to you... it makes jump starts much easier.
You also move about 1% of the cars weight to the rear, improving f/r weight distribution.
it also frees up space to mount one of my front strut tower braces
Its not that hard to do really... 2 hours or so and its done.
The brackets are easy to make and you just buy a marine battery box from GheyMart or Walmart and put the battery in there. The bracket is a $5 piece of aluminum stock from homodepot... 4 holes drilled in the well for rivets... put wood behind the metal when drilling or have a spotter or just be careful so you dont poke your fuel tank. I was careful and I had no problems.... did it like 30 secs before I drove down to H20 in MD.
