Since they are illegal, what you need is a detector that cannot be detected by the VG-2 (I think that is what it is called) detector-detector. Check back issues of Car and Driver for details.

Cordless detectors don't offer the detection range which a full power detector can provide.
I live in Canada, and I bought a BEL 855 STi model. The STi means that it is invisible to the VG-2 detector detector. I can vouch for the invisiblilty - I used to turn the detector off and remove it every time it went off (just in case), but eventually I got lazy and decided to leave it up. I've driven by countless cops with my radar alert going crazy, but have never even gotten so much as a glance from the police. If it's the cord you're worried about giving you away, you can get a straight cord (as opposed to coiled like a phone receiver cord) and run it under the dash, up the A pillar, and across the headliner to the visor area, leaving just enough to plug into the detector. Also, the 855 STi offers a "dark" mode for nighttime, in which it only sounds audible alerts - the screen stays dark.
Of course, all of the BEL-specific info is worthless if you can afford a Valentine One. The BEL's a great detector, but nothing compares to the V1. Valentine also offers a remote display that leaves the main unit dark and displays alert info at the lighter socket. Hope this Helps.
Good Luck,
Mark
