Default Belt tensioner problem

I have a 97 1.8TQ. Purchased it used late 2000 and one month after purchasing had an Audi dealer replace the belt tensioner. Two days ago it went bad again. Has this ever happened to anyone here before? The dealer I took it to today was suprised I was even able to drive it there without the belt snapping. The big concern is if there was any further damage done to the engine. Is anyone here aware of things to look for as possible engine damage?

Default if you REALLY wanna check for any bad bad bad damage...

you could always take the spark plugs out and check down the hole with a flash light to see if any valves are bent...

but other than that, there really is no way to check for problems, other than listening for the sounds of valves bending or taking off the head :P

The timing belt tensioner.

Default Actually, hoping it was just the serpentine tensioner..

You could compression test the engine. That may help diagnose whether the valve are bent. Other than that, and what bug suggests, there isn't a whole lot you can do.

That's what the Audi dealer said....valves would be the concern. I just hope there isn't any damage that will show itself up further down the road like when the warranty is over. They said the car sounded so bad they pushed it into the garage!

Yes, the serpentine belt tensioner. Did they upgrade the tensioner? The dealer today mentioned there is a whole kit for the replacement, including the roller and the serp. belt.

My mistake, I did mean to say the serpentine belt tensioner.

Default Heh, you're starting to confuse yourself here..

The serpentine belt powers the AC, Fan, and Power Steering. It has a tensioner, but this belt rarely breaks, and won't cause any damage.

The timing belt however is the belt that, when it breaks, causes all sorts of damage. This belt is tensioned with a tensioner that HAS undergone a major change around '99. You want to make sure your dealer upgrades to the new tensioner.

From your posts, it sounds like you busted the timing belt, not the serpentine belt.
