Default Best Radar Detector? Thinking of Bel 980, maybe BEL 946 since it is cordless? How is performance?

Bel 980 is a top performer, but I don't want to have a long cable going to the cig lighter! The Bel 946 is cordless, but I don't know how good the performance is...my car is leased, so I don't want to deal with changing things around too much

Thanks!

Default Cordless detectors offer significantly decreased range.

If you're after performance, stay away from the cordless units.

cordless performance is generally less then corded performance... best bet is to hardwire it...

Default Hardwiring radar detectors into our cars is really easy. And I would feel pretty comfortable...

saying that the Valentine One is the radar detector of choice around here. I actually just ordered one yesterday.

Valentine's Website

Default then for best performance, find the best way to get the wire out of your hands....

'cause cordless detectors are have significantly less performance....

Default hardwireing an escort 8500 is super super easy, no cutting or anything involved

i imagine the V1 is simular.. check out the tech sections.. just plug it into the fuse box

Default Sure. Here's the way it works...

I haven't done it yet, but this is how I understand it:

1) In the fuse panel (extreme left of the dashboard, only accessible when the driver's door is open), there is an empty fuse slot. #27, I think.

2) You tap into that power source and run the cable up the A-pillar. Most people tuck it under that little lip that runs the full height of the pillar and is on the driver's (not windshield) side of the pillar.

3) Then you run the cable across the top edge of the windshield along the edge of the headliner to the center where the rearview mirror is. Electrical tape should hold it up there & out of sight.

4) Finally, you run a small length behind the mirror and into the detector. And that's really the only part that you see. If you do it right, you probably won't even notice that. Maybe you could try wire ties or something to keep it tight against the mirror brace.

I'll be trying a hardwire tomorrow or Saturday when my Valentine One comes. I can't see it taking more than 45 minutes.

Sorry I don't have any pics, but hopefully I described it well enough for you to get the picture. And to answer your question...YES. It would be VERY easy to un-hardwire it since nothing is really permanently attached.
