i have an 01 1.8t i want to clean out the engine so i have herd a few different techniques and want to know which one is the best. should i buy one of those over the counter deals, i have also herd that if u drain the oil then fill the motor up with diesel fuel let it sit over night then drain that the diesel will clean it out, or should i just drop the pan and clean the pick ups and what not.. or are there better ways to clean out sludge?

well my oil sensor light came on and my oil temp no longer gives a reading.. looked on the forum said sludge, and lots of the 1.8t blow due to clogged pick ups.. correct? so i am thinking sludge removal is necessary?

it could be. Sometimes quick visual inspection is worthwhile.
The AutoRX is a product that will help. Using the correct oil (VAG 502.00) is mandatory and may slowly correct the issue. You could do a couple quick oil changes with one of the API 5W40 diesel oils. They tend to have more potent detergents that will aid in clean up. The AutoRX is probably the most aggressive track apart from the invasive strategy mentioned above.
I'm not sure I'd keep running this engine 'til you've determined what's actually taking place.

Just wondering, but has anyone put a borescope into the pan for a look at the pickup? It seems like that would be a pretty direct way to know for sure. Most people wouldn't have one, but some shops do, I'd expect.
