Best year for A4?

I'm considering buying a used 98.5 A4 from this guy at Mach V in Virginia. It's got 47,000 miles and $16k worth of mods. He's asking $26. My question is which A4 model year is the best?

Hehehe... I'll sell you my 99.5 with all my mods for that price too!

And 99.5 seems to be the model year of choice for many in this forum.

99.5 gets most of the updates of '00 but with nDBW. '00 gets xenons option. '01 gets ESP option...

... those are the major things. It depends what you are looking for.

What did he drop 16K on?

My brand new 2001.5 was only $27.3K. Mods usually decrease the value of the car also.
