Default Is better to have 30v 2.8 or 12v 2.8?

I am still looking to buy Audi A4 Quattro, and can't decide between 97 and 98 models. I have test drove 96, and 97 with 2.8 12v 5-speed, and they were ok, and I test drove 98 A4 30v 2.8 5-speed, and tiptronic, and I couldn't notice the difference, just tiptronic was different but cool,
the price difference between 96 and 97 were $2000, and between 97 and 98 was around $4500 and up. I haven't yet check with mechanic, but the engine sounded smooth, with good acceleration, most of the 96 and 97 went through scheduled maintance, new tie rods, timing belt/ some had water pump changed, new brakes, and I have saw repair papers, but 98 models did not have much done besides the brakes pads, oil change, and some had tires changed, and one of them had tie rods changed. I am looking to keep my car longer then 4 years, and of course I want to save money in long run, can't decided the engine, how reliable is 12v 2.8 over 30v 2.8 in maintnance? are there any signficant changes were made between 96 and 98 models, that I should take to count...

I would consider the 30v. But both engines are great. the 30v is newer, and more powerful.
