Are the bigger oil filters really necessary with synthetic oil in our engines?
I just got an order I placed with 3 filters and I realized that they are the wrong ones. The web site isn't exactly clear on the version you are about to buy. I don't want to send them back because it's a pain in my ****. Is it that huge of a difference with synthetic oil?

not sure what MY you have but the nDBW cars seem to run about 15° F cooler with the new oil filter
IMHO I think its worth it. Moreover, Audi sent out that huge oil sludge letter about engines, people not using oil that meets a certain spec, etc.. Almost like a recall, and the key thing the factory changed was the oil filter. They just didn't do that without just cause. Given the cost of the engine (or the oil pump for that matter, and how ridiculously impossible it is to reach) Why take a chance.
my 0.02 cents.

It's a nDBW. I figured they upped the filter size to trap the extra sludge you'd get...
by switching to synthetic. That and they wanted to fvck everybody up, since they're so good at it.

maybe..
those cooler temps would probably also help reduce sludge.
The biggest concern I have read about is the oil pickup tube in the oil pan that can get clogged with debris and such, if using a larger oil filter reduces the chances of this happening then I'm all for it.

No.
If you're doing 5K oil changes with synthetic, you should be fine. Digit@lex pulled off his valve cover near 100K, and his engine looks pristine. Nearly half that mileage was with a big turbo as well.
Just use the smaller filters if thats what you have.

One thing, though. I haven't always been running synthetic. 2nd. synthetic change coming up
but the shop ran an engine cleaner before putting in synthetic oil. Prior to this, the oil was changed every 5k. Never went more than 200 miles over.

those huge napa filters? Ya they work great at lowering temps and btw you have to use synth in a4's
More oil means being able to suck up more energy while maintaining a lower heat. So extending the oil pan and using multiple or larger filters is always a good idea, even if it does add weight
whats with people thinking using synthetic is some luxury or just allows you higher service intervals? Sure you can wait alot longer between oil changes and then your car will start the lose performance or die much sooner.
i always go napa 1333 oil filter and then use 5 quarts of either amsoil 10-30 or mobil1 5-30
it's worked well for the last 16 months in which ive put around 40,000 miles on the car, and I drive the car very hard daily.

All other issues being equal, a bigger filter is better.
Is anyone using the big gun NAPA 1333 filter or the Volvo (VW) diesel Purolator L40316 filter or its equivalent? There has been a lot of pros and cons regarding these.
