Default Blinking CEL with very rough idle, help

So i let my mom take my car to do some arrons for the day as i needed her station wagon to move some of my stuff (she is a very good driver and just got rid of an rx8 'stick' she had for 2 years).

She calls me and explains that the check engine light comes on all of a suden and is blinking, also that the car isnt driving too smooth. I tell her to come home asap. I confirmed the blinking cel and very very rough idle and shut it off. I am going to vag it tomarow, becuase i currently do not own one, and see what codes it pulls.

After searching the forums i guess im expecting to see a random cylinder misfire, Hopefully on cylinder 2 which seems to be the problem for many 1.8t owners 1997-1999 with this same problem.

I want to go into this problem with some more insight then i currently have. So im thinking ignition amplifer first, then coilpacks. Is there anyway to check the coil packs to see if there good? I plan on doing the DIY ignition amplifier test tomarow to see if its toast? (Also, anyone know where to get an ignition AMP for cheaper then $300 at the dealer and $250 from ECS? 'if it is the problem of course')

I cleaned the intercooler out real good 3 days ago, but it has been flawless since then so i dont think thats the culprit. I also changed from the giac chipped ECU to stock, no change.

Anyways if anyone has any suggestions of what to check or look for it would be of great help.

I will update the post tomarow with the code that its throwing.

Thanks

Default Hey bud.. yeah start with coilpacks.. easy way to check =

log misfires. Swap coilpack.. re log... if the misfire changes to the cylinder you swapped coilpack to.. voila. Best bet is to change all coilpacks at once. If coilpacks don't help.. then replace ICM.. another option is plugs. I ran some **** in my 1.8t and started throwing codes if i got on it too fast when the engine was cold. Once it warmed up it was ok. Good luck hope CA is treating you well..

Default It's more than likley the ICM...more

Coil packs usally don't go bad on the 97-99.5 cars.
Even if it's not the #2 cylinder it still could be the ICM. You can get a missfire on anyone of the 4 clyinders although #2 cylinder is the most common.

I would check out Ebay you should beable to find the one you need for under a $100.00
