Default Boost level fluctuating? GIAC chip.

Got a GIAC chipped 2000 1.8tqm, ATW I think?

Haven't been around these parts in a long time, but I have sort of an issue that I'm lost on. Occasionally, my boost level fluctuates, but not like a leak--it seems like it's reverting back to OEM levels.

From a 17-18psi normal peak level it reverts to a steady 7-8psi peak boost (and you can feel the lack of power). It's really weird because on a single 10-15 mile trip it will fluctuate up to maybe 2 or 3 times (boosting fine, then boosting at OEM level). A/C off.. turn the engine off and on, doesn't make a difference.

I have NO idea's here, is it a problem with the chip? If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

N75 valve or MAF sensor. You may have a vac line leak at the N75. Any check engine light, ever?

Default Your N75 is shot

inspect all vac lines. Just had a buddy with the same symptoms as you are describing. new N75 cured all.

Either get an N75 valve or a manual boost controller.

Cheers,
Joel

Thanks for the quick responses! Actually I did forget to mention, it's been happening for a few weeks but only in the last week the CE light's come on a couple times.

Weird--my buddy was talking about the wastegate but said it wouldn't fluctuate between the same levels when it was working properly or not. Hmmm.. weird. I'll take a look at that.

Default Do you have access to Vag-Com? Pull the codes, that should be #1, don't just throw parts at it yet.

Chances are it's the N75, or the vac lines/wires to it.

Default I had similar problem. if i was accelerating slowly would reach 5 psi, then if floored it would not

go any higher than 5 PSI, if I let off it (so boost dropped back down) and then floored it i'd get normal boost levels. It was just the N75 acting stupid, (and I had N75 intermittent signal code) replaced N75 and car has been running better. Wouldnt he have a CEL code though if it was N75 malfunctioning?
