Bose radio head programming.

I have a 99.5 A4 with a Bose stereo system. I understand that the head unit is the same for both Bose and non-Bose. However, I also believe that the head unit should somehow "recognize" that it is working with a Bose system. This will cause the radio to display "BOSE" upon power-up and maybe it does other things too, I don't know (i.e. change the EQ of the outputs?). I recently had my radio replaced by my dealer due to a display problem. My old radio used to say "BOSE" on the display when I powered it on. My replacement radio does not. My dealer told me I will have to come in to have the radio "reprogrammed" in order to correct this. He says they have to do it with their computer and it is not something I can do myself. Does anybody know the "reprogramming" procedure? Does the dealer have to do it, or is he giving me a line of BS, and therefore I can do it myself if I knew the procedure???
