Broken timing belt on a 1.8t. What to do?

I'm looking at buying an A4 with a broken belt. What's the fix? Pull the head and send it off to the machine shop for new valves and guides? Or are the heads generally toast? What are junkyards getting for used heads...assuming you can find them? Any stories of piston damage, or just valves?
Stories welcome.

Your in trouble if the valve head broke off and went into the cylinder.

$1k for a used head seems about average.
You will be at least half of that into the valves.
Head gasket, timing belt, water pump, tensioners and roller...add anoth $500 for so.
It can be done in an easy weekend. You will have dingson the pistons, but I would not worry. I know of at least two cars that are running around like that, one is a well sorted K04 and the other I just got done blasting to 6k a few times
