Burned out heated mirrors

I think my heated mirrors burned out. It was 14 degrees F outside and the mirrors had ice and snow on them and it didn't melt. The mirror glass itself was freezing. Does this mean they burned out? I would assume so, it's just that I never felt them before, when they were "working."<br>Also, what do they replace under warranty? The whole mirror assembly?<br>Thanx.<p>Gus<br>1997 A4 2.8Q

I thought mine gave out also...the dealer claims that when you turn on your interior heater, the mirrors heat up as well...they tested and it worked...I'll test them out in the sierras this weekend...<p>P2

That's a new one. Theory #314 on how these mirrors are supposed to work.<p>Did the dealer mention at what magical setting the mirrors are activated? Do I need to roast myself at 80 inside when it's only 30 outside? <p>

And Audi refuses to redesign the mirrors/system....I sure wouldn't hire these engineers in my company!!<p>The glass pops out in 30 seconds, remove the the wire connectors, pop replacement back in.<p>I wired mine to come on with the rear defroster switch and they should last at least 10 years now.<p>About $200 for replacements after warranty!!!<br>

As Ray's pointed out, his fix isn't workable with the trip computer/Tip combination (I think it is) because you lose some of the display functions... the more pain in the #$@ solution is to simply remove the fuse for the heated mirrors (#9) when you don't need them. In some locales that may be a real pain, but here in No. Virginia, you probably only need them a few days a year -- like yesterday when it snowed 8". I just popped the fuse in before I took my car out of the parking garage I park in during the day. It would be a bigger pain to come out in the morning to a snowed in car in the driveway and then do the fuse thing. But, yes, it is a poor design.
