burnt headlight switch and alternate fog light wiring

To make a long story short when installing lower fogs in my 98.5, 2.8 I simply tapped the existing fog light wiring (at back of headlight assembly) so both upper and lower come on when pressing the fog switch on the interior panel. Based on past posts, it seems that I have fried my headlight switch (heads and fogs don't work but bulbs are fine; parking lights and turn sigs work; highbeams work only when the headlight switch 'arm' is pulled toward driver). Others have reported the same problem when switching to higher wattage bulbs in heads or fogs.
I'll likely buy a new switch and install myself. But I'm looking for suggestions on how to rewire my lower fogs so that I don't keep buring up headlight switches. Any suggestions?
