Is buying a '96 A4 2.8Q with 116K miles on it a bad decision...

I have an A6 and my friend is looking at the above mentioned car. My first thought was that a car with that many miles may have problems, but then I thought, well, a car with that many miles may have already had it's major problems corrected. Can y'all tell me your thoughts on higher mileage cars like this one and what kind of life expectancy we have on our cars. Also, with these points in mind, is it worth paying $1500 or so for a warranty. Thanks!

okay, really. I would not buy an A4 w/ that many miles. You never know though, it could never have a problem, but I would really try to find something else. Maybe go for a 1.8t instead.

havent really had a huge problems...
electrical and some oil leaks (expected)
go for it, im sure you can get a nice looking car for a good price due to the year and miles.
(Though the cars engine is not mod friendly)

Though maintenance on these cars can get expensive, because labor costs can get expensive. Getting it done right can get expensive--whether you pay a good lawyer, doctor, accountant, or mechanic.
Parts' costs do not "shock the conscience" as many complain; yes, they cost a little more than most American and some (not all) Japanese parts, but, given their quality, VAG parts usually appear very competitvely priced. I drove a 1984 Nissan Maxima for over 250,000 miles, and, after 150,000 miles, it cost a lot to replace so many worn out parts on the engine and chassis. Considering the rate of inflation, I believe labor cost a lot less on the Japanese car and parts cost a little less.
