Default Buying a car out of state?

Has anyone ever done this? I've found some answers on what is required, but even department of transportation websites seems sketchy.

If I buy a car out of state, do I pay my state's sales tax or the state's sale tax where I buy the car? Do I have to pay an immediate fee to get the car registered in my state, or can I want until registration runs out? Are there any other hidden fees dealing with transfering a title accross state lines?

Thanks in advance,
Jordan

Default Re: Buying a car out of state? I did, and it's not that bad (depending on state)

Brought my used 97 A4 from Cherry Hill imports...paid a small registration swap (had a 98 RS...transferred the registration/plate to the A4), and paid the PA sales tax of 6% (plus an addtional 1%) at the dealership. No NJ sales tax at all.

There were no hidden fees for this paperwork/title transfer, etc.

I bought my car in Iowa, and I live in Illinois. I paid for the sales tax in my county and got IL plates. The dealership took care of all the paper work for me, so ask your dealer if they can process it for you. I was told that, you pay for the tax in the county of you live in to get the plates. And to get plates, you have to be a resident of that state.

I suppose you can get plates in the state you're buying it in and pay the tax there if it's cheaper than the tax in your state, but you have to have proof of residence in that state.

Default CA dealer drove it into AZ for me to pick up

This way, since I took delivery out of state, no CA sales tax.

Went to AZ dmv and they wanted to charge sales tax on entire purchase price - which is not what the law says. Law in AZ says pay only on the net price after trade-in allowance. Had to call and have someone point out the page of their own manual which states this before she would only charge sales tax on the net purchase price.

Then the state told the city and the city sent me an invoice for the city sales tax.

My advice is to call two or three times and verify what you will be on the hook for prior to making the transaction.
