I need to replace the rack on my '97 A4 1.8T. I found some good deals online, but its only worth it if I get the core deposit back. How do I ship a steering rack? If the core deposit is like $200 bucks would it even be worth the cost of shipping the old rack back to the online seller?

Probably in the same carton they send your new one in. You could take it to a UPS store to ship it out, or contact the seller to see what their shipping charges are, who they use for shipping. Keep in mind that there may be local rack rebuilders.

Point taken on using the packaging from the new one.
Any ideas on how much it would weigh? Maybe I can get a estimate from UPS.
The website uses UPS and they charge something like $35 for 2-day shipping, but that it probably with a discount or contract they have with UPS.

Ask the seller if they can include a pre-printed UPS return label, which they would charge you for upfront. That way, you just dump out all the fluid, bag and box the rack, and drop it off at any UPS location.

I just did a search for the part on eBay, which I hadn't done before and I found it for a much better price and most include a pre-paid UPS label.
Thanks for your help...now I just have to make sure I get the right one.
