Buying a used chip
Im think of purchasing a chip used, but was wondering, if the cars are from same year and same engine (1.8T), then does the tranny type matter from one car to another, since the tranny has its own separate computer. Specifically, the chip is off a manual and I have a tiptronic.
oh yeah, both would be NDBW

You don't flash the chip! You just need a VAG tool...
to change the soft coding from manual to tip. Just write down the code on your stock chip once you VAG it. Put in the new chip and then change soft coding to the stock code. No big deal at all.

I thought the same and all 4 installers I called said it needed to be flashed
I specifically asked if all I needed to do was use a VAG tool and they said I needed to have the chip flashed by an installer.. Either way I found a company that includes the flashing charge with installation so it doesn't matter to me.

I can solder the chip to the board thats the easy part, its just having to buy a VAG COM just to
reflash the ecu seems like a pain in the *** just to save a few bucks.
