This is for a 99 AEB. CPS is G40 so I get the same pins you see. I'd think about what Prospeeder was asking about the timing too though.

If the system detected that timing was off, it would throw a different code. I don't remember the code number, but it is about correlation of the engine speed sensor and the camshaft position sensor.

He is getting a code where the ECU cannot read the CPS. Not correlation.

I don't think this is timing-related.

Had to look that up. P0016 is "Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation" but it doesn'[t look like Audi uses that one. Maybe you're thinking of P1340 Crankshaft-/Camshaft Pos.Sens.Signals Out of Sequence.

Either way, I think you're right GTA.

Completed cams pos sensor wiring check according to Bentley:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/111499056/...m-Sensor-Check

Everything checks your. Code erased several times via VAGcom (with engine running, code comes back instantaneous), battery disconnected (long time), battery disconnect and plus/minus discharge.

Code comes back.

Pulling cam pos sensor connector off while engine running produces the exact same code (ECU basically not seeing the cam sensor).

Done with several good and one brand new known good sensor.

Done with 3 known good, no code ECU.

Finally cut off connector (wire section accessible without breaking apart the rest of the harness) and soldered one on from other car.

No change.

Any other possibilities?

Today, plan to break open the 2 ECU connectors to get to wire 11, 67 and 76 and run new wires to connectors (even so they tested ok).

Any other ideas or suggestions or comments?

Haven't checked. Would that throw the 'open or short' cam sensor code?

Yea I hear you. Ross tech suggests that as a check though.

No obvious 'rattle' noise, but will listen more carefully in the afternoon.

Its a Cam timing issue, or a bad ECU. Have you even verified cam timing??

That's the one. Had that code on my father's 1.8T ATW A4. Someone previously messed with the top end, reinstalled the TB by marking, and on top of it, hammered the cam sprocket backwards. The tooth in the sprocket was broken 90%, and just a tiny bump was preventing it from spinning.

We got super lucky. After resetting the timing and replacing the sprocket, the car came alive.
