Default Timing off

You win!
Timing was off by about 2 teeth.
Corrected the timing, started right away and runs great.
Had first checked compression (130,125,130,130).

My friend told that if the cam sensor 'gap' is really off the mark, the ECU may not be able to read anything and throws the 'open or short' code. He was right.

IMO: very misleading code! Including Bentley ("replace cam position sensor"), no hint whatsoever that cam timing could cause this fault.

He is getting a code where the ECU cannot read the CPS. Not correlation.

I don't think this is timing-related.
I have the '99 A4 1.8T AEB audi. I bough it as a project it is not starting. I scanned the OBD codes and it gave me "p0501 vehicle speed sensor" and "p1338 camshaft sensor BANK1 OPEN CIRCUIT SHORT TO B"

Is this my timing? I replaced the VSS and no luck. I know a bad cam sensor would prevent starting. But after changing the VSS i cleared the codes and no codes are coming up now.
