Can anyone give me the instructions on how to change the inner tie rod?
I have narrowed down my problem last night and there seems to be clunking coming from the inner part of the tie rod. Any help would be appreciated.

I put the car up on ramps and had a friend move the steering wheel back &
forth while I looked under at the tie rod. It is right at the rack and I could feel it on the inner tie rod. So on that I assume the whole thing needs replaced.

Here's the basic procedure
Remove the outer tie rod end, very easy, just unbolt it and unscrew it from the inner tie rod, which is behind the boot. You'll probably want new ones on hand because your old ones might be frozen. I would start by backing off the locking screw for it and spraying it with penetrating oil for a few days.
Then:
Tie rods, removing and installing
Special tools and workshop equipment required
VAG 1923 (which is a crow's foot, I think 22mm but not sure)
Left and right tie rods are identical.
They can be removed and installed with power steering gear remaining installed.
Removing
- Remove tie rod end and press aside downward.
- Open clamps on boot.
- Pull boot as far as possible outward.
- Remove tie rod with VAG 1923.
- Replace boot and/or tie rod depending on respective degree of damage.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal.
- Checking vehicle alignment Page 44-19
You'll need a crows foot for the inner tie rod end, don't know what it is, but probably 22mm.
I would have a new boot on hand, you can always use tie wraps for the boot clamps. Here's a few pictures of how I screwed up my inner boot on my A8 which was then replaced. And a few pictures of the outer and inner tie rod.
