I called Crutchfield.com and they told me that there is no way to upgrade the speakers or add subs to the 1996 BOSE system.
Is this true? Am I stuck with a sound system that cannot be upgraded in any way? I hope there is some way around this. Any suggestions?

turn the BOSE mode off. There are line outs on the back already so you can run aftermarket speakers thru an amp. You will need an adpator to access the line outs though...$9 from Crutchfield.

That's defined by the Bose amp and the bose speakers. Turning it off would not be a requirement to upgrade the system, more of a recommendation.
