can I put together a big turbo upgrade (T28, T3/4, etc) for less than PES kit?

That will certainly make up for lag. :-) ... but it's friggin' stupid. Hey - is the PES TT done?

Yeah I agree. And the PES T28 kit has a nice looking torque curve. I have a friend who would do the tuning (but not for free -- it's his job), so that route is an option. Part of the problem is that I am torn between sinking a bunch of money into the A4 and buying something else like a motorcycle or a faster car. (Or, I'm just cheap.)
