Default 'test' pipe replaced the cat, a downpipe goes from your cat to below the car

at least when where talkin audis and the cat is right behind the turbo.

Default Depends on the how you look at it.

Test-pipe: A straight pipe designed to replace the CAT (for off road use of course)

Downpipe: Connects CAT with flex section to rest of exhaust.

A Downpipe could in theory include the portion of pipe to eliminate the cat (test-pipe) in one piece .. These are commonly called Race downpipe.
